INTIMACY COORDINATION (for film and tv)
WHAT DOES AN INTIMACY COORDINATOR DO?
WHEN SHOULD AN INTIMACY COORDINATOR BE ENGAGED?
- I will facilitate clear communication linking the directors vision with the performers personal, emotional and physical boundaries
- I will implement closed-set protocols respecting the union guidelines for scenes containing intimacy, simulated sex, nudity and/or high emotional content
- I will advocate for all actors (while being an ally to BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ folks), putting the wellbeing and safety of the performers first
- I will work collaboratively with the Director to assist in choreographing scenes with intimacy and/or simulated sex
- I will help cultivate safer, respectful and enjoyable workspaces
- I will act as the liaison between departments when overseeing the use of intimacy garments and barriers
WHEN SHOULD AN INTIMACY COORDINATOR BE ENGAGED?
- When production would like to make a safer pre-production and on-set environment for the actors
- When a rider is needed for a scene involving simulated sex and/or nudity
- When there is a positional power dynamic involved in an intimate scene
- When an actor requires support or a bystander with sensitive material
- When a director is seeking support communicating sensitive material to actors
INTIMACY DIRECTION and INTIMACY CHOREOGRAPHY (for stage)
WHAT DOES AN INTIMACY DIRECTOR DO?
WHEN SHOULD AN INTIMACY DIRECTOR BE ENGAGED?
- I will establish and model a culture of consent in the rehearsal room
- I will facilitate protocols around incorporating consent into the rehearsal process
- I will assist in staging platonic, romantic and sexual intimacy as well as simulated sex acts
- I will be a part of establishing healthy guidelines and practices for nudity in performance
- I will work in collaboration with a fight director to stage scenes of sexual harassment or assault
- I will offer tools for managing personal boundaries, and for creating separation between the artist and the work
WHEN SHOULD AN INTIMACY DIRECTOR BE ENGAGED?
- Consider engaging an Intimacy Director as early as possible
- When a script has nudity or partial nudity, simulated consensual or non-consensual sex acts and/or kissing
- When a script portrays intimacy between youths or between youths and adults
- When a script has a scene that requires a heightened state of emotion from performers (i.e. trauma, hysteria)
- When a performer asks for an Intimacy Director
- When you require assistance creating a casting notices
- If you would like to offer a workshop on consent as a rehearsal practice
- When you need advise around masking, modesty garments and other production logistics
- When you need someone to advise on conflict resolution
